Renaming Washington Football Team could take at least a year?

The NFL's Washington team may require more than a full year to acquire trademarks for a new name and logo.

As ESPN's John Keim noted, Washington head coach Ron Rivera spoke with Jeremy Schaap about the procedure.

"We told everybody, we've learned through this process of trying to understand it that it's gonna take us at least 12 to 18 months to do it right," Rivera explained. "We may have a decision on the name sooner. But to do it right, to produce it right, to put it out right, we've got to go through the process."

Per Keim, Washington could have a new name as soon as the upcoming NFL season, but the club may not receive final trademark approval for the name and new logo until the end of 2021.

Earlier on Friday, rumors surfaced that the franchise could potentially become the D.C. Sentinels. Keim previously tweeted that name is not an option:

Sentinels was the name of the Washington football team in the movie "The Replacements."
