Report: 49ers 'ready to make pick' between Mac Jones, Justin Fields or Trey Lance

The San Francisco 49ers are prepared to select their quarterback of the future with the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the 49ers are ready to make a pick between Mac Jones, Justin Fields or Trey Lance.

Fowler said on "SportsCenter," per Bleacher Report:

"I'm told the work is done in Santa Clara. They have wrapped up their draft meetings officially. They're ready to make this pick, but it's in the hands of Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. They're probably not telling anybody. Nobody in that building knows and doesn't expect to know until Thursday. But the coaches broke down Mac Jones, Justin Fields and Trey Lance this week together in a neutral process. I'm told they've kept an open mind with Justin Fields and Trey Lance winning them over. They had a good process, but there's still a decent amount of buzz league-wide about Mac Jones."

The 49ers likely knew who they were selecting when they traded three first-round picks to move up in this year's draft. With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson expected to be taken first and second overall, the 49ers will have their pick of Jones, Fields or Lance.

Jones has been viewed as the favorite since San Francisco completed the trade for the third overall pick. He had a tremendous season with Alabama in 2020, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns against four interceptions while completing 77.4 percent of his passes.

However, Fields is considered the third-best quarterback in the draft, and Jones is deemed to be fourth.

San Francisco's interest in a quarterback stems from Jimmy Garoppolo's extensive injury history. It's believed the franchise will start Garoppolo in 2021 and allow this year's third overall pick to learn under him before making the jump to starter in 2022.
