The Atlanta Falcons made a significant move in the opening round of the 2024 NFL Draft, opting for quarterback Michael Penix Jr. as their eighth overall pick.

However, reports from Steve Wyche of NFL Network revealed that the Falcons were also poised to make another bold maneuver. They attempted to trade back into the first round with a keen eye on securing edge rusher Laiatu Latu.

Unfortunately for Atlanta, their efforts fell short, as Latu was snagged by the Indianapolis Colts with the 15th overall pick.

As the draft’s premier defensive selection, Latu could have addressed a pressing need for the Falcons, boasting an impressive collegiate resume highlighted by 24 sacks and 100 tackles. His accolades include All-America honors and recognition as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Despite concerns stemming from a previous neck injury in 2020, Latu showcased resilience by participating in 25 out of 26 games after his transfer to UCLA in December 2021. With his potential to emerge as a dynamic defensive force, the Colts secured a promising asset for their roster.

The Falcons, meanwhile, grapple with a lack of pass rush production, with no player surpassing seven sacks in the 2023 season. Latu could have swiftly assumed a significant role in revitalizing their defensive unit. However, Atlanta ultimately opted for Penix, acknowledging his developmental trajectory given the team’s recent acquisition of Kirk Cousins on a four-year deal in March.

According to Wyche’s report, the Falcons prioritized a long-term succession plan over immediate roster enhancement, steering their draft strategy towards securing Penix.

With the first round concluded, the Atlanta Falcons now shifts their focus to addressing remaining roster gaps throughout the ensuing six rounds of the draft.
