As the James Madison Dukes continue preparations for the 2024 season, new head coach Bob Chesney is reportedly targeting a familiar face for his first coaching staff.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported on Monday that Chesney was looking to add New York Giants assistant offensive line coach Chris Smith as the Dukes' new offensive line coach.

Smith joined the Giants prior to the 2023 season. Prior to that, Smith spent one season as the offensive coordinator at Holy Cross under Chesney in 2022. He stepped down to join the Giants after helping lead Holy Cross to their fourth consecutive Patriot League title. Smith spent five seasons before that as the offensive line coach, run game coordinator, and recruiting coordinator for the Crusaders.

The Dukes will begin spring practice on March 21. JMU's first spring game under Chesney's staff is set for April 20.
