Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

There continues to be consistent signs that the Cleveland Browns are not totally sold on Baker Mayfield.

Pro Fooball Network’s Aaron Wilson reported on Monday that the Browns are “not entirely satisfied” with Mayfield as their quarterback. Not only have they reportedly shown interest in Deshaun Watson, but they also reportedly have fielded trade calls on Mayfield.

This report is not too surprising. We shared last week that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reportedly were showing some interest in Mayfield. Of course, that report came two days before Tom Brady announced his return.

Mayfield turns 27 in a month and has been with the Browns for four years since they drafted him No. 1 overall in 2018. He has shown promise at times, like his rookie and third seasons. But he has taken steps back in his second and fourth seasons. Last season when he struggled, he dealt with injuries.

Mayfield led Cleveland to an 11-6 season in 2020 and their first playoff win since 1994. He has the ability to elevate the franchise. But the Browns also would like to have more consistent strong play at quarterback. That explains their interest in Watson. But just because they’re receiving trade calls on Mayfield doesn’t mean they’re going to deal him. It could jut mean that other teams recognize that he might be available.
