Report: Chargers will have second interview with Jim Harbaugh

Perhaps Jim Harbaugh is ready to return to the NFL and move to Los Angeles.

Per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chargers will meet with the 60-year-old for the second time later this week.

Harbaugh is also expected to have a second interview with the Atlanta Falcons. However, L.A. is a more attractive destination. The Chargers already have a franchise QB in Justin Herbert, who threw 20 TDs and posted the league's fifth-best QBR (64.3) in 13 games.

"Everybody seems to think that's a match that makes a lot of sense from both sides' perspective, which I think it does," Schefter said Monday on "The Pat McAfee Show." "The Chargers have cast a wide net on a lot of people, and it may just be they settle it on Jim Harbaugh."

Los Angeles also recently interviewed former Tennessee Titans HC Mike Vrabel. Harbaugh might be the preferred candidate because he knows owner Dean Spanos. The former QB played for the Chargers for two seasons (1999-2000).

He could still return to Michigan, though. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported it offered him a 10-year, $125M contract extension with a no-NFL clause.

If Harbaugh returned to the NFL, he could join rare company. Only three coaches — Barry Switzer, Pete Carroll and Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson — have won a national championship and a Super Bowl. This opportunity could entice him, meaning it wouldn't be a surprise if he agrees to become the Chargers HC.

He would be an upgrade over Brandon Staley, who Los Angeles fired after Week 15. In three seasons with the organization, he went 24-24 and had no playoff wins. Harbaugh went 44-19-1 and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl XLVII appearance while he served as San Francisco HC from 2011-14.
