Report: Chiefs, HC Andy Reid working on contract extension

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is in line for a massive raise.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported the 65-year-old and the Chiefs are working on a contract that should make him the highest-paid coach in the NFL.

Unlike player contracts, coach contracts aren't on the public record, but it's believed Reid is eighth among coaches in average annual salary. Pelissero added that more than "half a dozen" coaches make more than $15M annually.

Extending Reid is clearly the right move. Last season, the Chiefs became the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the 2004 New England Patriots. They've also captured eight straight AFC West titles, the second-longest streak in league history.

"He's one of the best coaches of all time. I believe he's the best coach of all time," K.C. quarterback Patrick Mahomes said after Super Bowl LVIII, via CBS News. "I know he doesn't have the trophies yet, and I have a lot of respect for some of those great coaches. But the way he's able to navigate every single team he has and continue to have success no matter where he's at."

Some speculated the future Hall of Famer would retire this offseason, but he already confirmed he would come back in 2024, as will most of the coaching staff. Earlier this offseason, the Chiefs re-signed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and special teams coordinator Dave Toub. This bodes well for their Super Bowl chances.

Next season, K.C. will aim to become the first team in league history to three-peat as champions. As of Monday, FanDuel gives the team the second-best Super Bowl LIX odds (+650) behind the San Francisco 49ers.
Reid, meanwhile, could become the third HC with four or more Super Bowl rings, joining HOFer Chuck Knoll and former Patriots HC Bill Belichick.
