Report: Cowboys interested in adding four-time Pro Bowl RB

The Dallas Cowboys' rushing attack hasn't met expectations this season, so adding a four-time Pro Bowl running back seems like a great idea.

Per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the Cowboys will mull adding running back Dalvin Cook, who the New York Jets waived Tuesday.

"Those are questions you are always visiting with and so forth," Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said of signing Cook Wednesday, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. "Obviously, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him, played a number of games against [him] when Dalvin was in Minnesota. I have great respect for him."

The main concern about Cook is whether or not the 28-year-old has any gas left in the tank. He underperformed in 15 games with New York, posting a career-low 3.2 yards per carry and had no rushing TDs.

However, it wouldn't be fair to pin all of the blame on him. Pro Football Focus recently rated the Jets' offensive line as the worst in the league. Dallas, meanwhile, has the sixth-best O-line.

The Cowboys backfield doesn't need an explosive playmaker, but it needs someone who can take the load off Tony Pollard. Through 16 games, he has a career-high 235 carries — sixth in the NFL — and it's taking a toll. He's also posted a career-low four yards per carry. Backup RB Rico Dowdle has averaged 3.9 yards per carry in 15 games and is questionable with an ankle injury.

While Cook may no longer be a star, he's still a serviceable back who will add needed depth. Dallas (11-5) should kick the tires on him.

Plus, preserving Pollard's durability is critical to a deep playoff run. The Cowboys have a solid chance to end their 28-year championship drought. As of Wednesday, FanDuel gives them the third-best Super Bowl odds (+850).
