Report: Cowboys plan to meet with CFP semifinal MVP before draft

Although the Cowboys added WR depth when they traded for Brandin Cooks, they still crave more.

According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Dallas has an upcoming visit with TCU's Quentin Johnston, considered one of the top wideouts in the 2023 NFL Draft.

At 6-foot-3 and 208-pounds, draft experts believe Johnston's physical measurables and athleticism could help him flourish.

"Johnston is in rarified air from a physical standpoint," wrote Pro Football Focus' Michael Renner. "You don't often see 208-pounders stop on a dime and send corners flying like Johnston can."

He dominated on one of college football's grandest stages, too. In a 51-45 College Football Playoff semifinal victory over Michigan, Johnston hauled in six catches for 163 yards and caught a 76-yard touchdown pass. He earned the game's offensive MVP.

He made 2022 First-Team All Big-12 and reeled in 60 receptions for 1,069 yards in 2022.

The 21-year-old wideout possesses physical traits and skills the Cowboys might covet. Nonetheless, Johnston might be gone when the Cowboys select No. 26 overall. Per Tankathon, the Steelers will choose the TCU WR with the No. 17 pick.

Other WR-needy teams have met with Johnston. Per Watkins, the Patriots, Titans and Giants already spoke with the WR. Each selects before Dallas.

"Then again, just based on the unpredictability of these (mock) drafts, maybe he's sitting in the 20s, and if that's the case, the Cowboys have a decision to make," wrote Watkins.

The Cowboys should mull drafting Johnston if he's available. He, Cooks, Pro Bowl WR CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup could form an electric WR corps.
