Report: Cowboys unlikely to sign QB before showdown with Eagles

The Dallas Cowboys may start Ben DiNucci at quarterback versus the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night but won't scan free agency for a new signal-caller this week.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that new starting QB Andy Dalton, who replaced the injured Dak Prescott, remains in the concussion protocol following a brutal hit delivered by Washington Football Team linebacker Jon Bostic during Sunday's game that Washington won 25-3. DiNucci, who took over for Dalton, will be given the keys to the offense on Sunday night if the former Cincinnati Bengals starter can't go.

Rapoport added that the Cowboys are unlikely to sign a different QB this week, in part because league coronavirus protocols and the COVID-19 waiting time would probably prevent that signal-caller from being available for Sunday's game. Dallas also has journeyman veteran Garrett Gilbert on the roster.

Dalton connected on 9-of-19 passes for 75 yards with an interception before Bostic knocked him out of the game with 6:22 to play in the third quarter. While Bostic was ejected, it's believed he won't receive any additional punishment from the league.

Washington coach Ron Rivera spoke with Dallas' Mike McCarthy about the incident after the game.

"I went up to him and apologized to him for it," Rivera explained to ProFootballTalk. "I wanted him to know that we don't play that way, and it's unfortunate that it happened."
