Report: Drew Brees comeback unlikely after undergoing recent shoulder surgery

New Orleans Saints legend and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees retired after the 2020 NFL season and spent the 2021 campaign working as an analyst with NBC Sports. Most, if not everyone, assumed Brees had appeared in his last professional game until he took to Twitter on Sunday and teased that he "may play football again."

Current Saints head coach Dennis Allen seemed to pour cold water on the idea of Brees possibly returning to the club's active roster this year when he said Monday he thought the signal-caller's comment was "made in jest."

"We certainly haven't had any conversations in that regard," Allen added at that time.

According to a new report from ESPN's Ed Werder, Brees may not physically be able to play in at least Week 1 of the 2022 season if he is serious about ending his retirement.

As things stand today, the Saints have Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton occupying the top two spots on the depth chart at the quarterback position. Allen insisted earlier this month he believes Winston will be fully recovered from the torn ACL and damage to his MCL he suffered last Halloween in time to start this coming September. Dalton will serve as New Orleans' temporary QB1 if Winston is sidelined.
