Report: Eagles informing HC candidates they want to keep Carson Wentz

The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason with many questions at quarterback. However, it appears the franchise is keen on keeping Carson Wentz around despite former head coach Doug Pederson's decision to pivot to Jalen Hurts midseason.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Philadelphia's front office has told coaching candidates during interviews that they plan to keep Wentz moving forward. However, the head coach will have a say in who starts at quarterback, but if a candidate chooses Hurts over Wentz, they might be out of the running.

"If you're a head coach going into those meetings saying, 'I want Wentz out and Hurts in,' I think that's probably going to hurt your standing in this interview process," Garafolo said.

The Eagles reportedly "have every intention" to keep Wentz and "have him be a major part of their team," ESPN's Adam Schefter said in December. Philadelphia believes the 27-year-old can return to the quarterback he once was.

Wentz was one of Philadelphia's biggest problems during the 2020 season. In 12 games, the North Dakota St. product went 3-8-1, completing 57.4 percent of his passes for 2,620 yards and 16 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. Wentz's picks led the NFL, as did his sacks (50).

If the Eagles end up starting Hurts at quarterback next season, Wentz may end up seeking a trade as he reportedly has "no interest" in being a backup.

Since firing Pederson after five seasons, the Eagles have interviewed Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, and New England Patriots assistant Jerod Mayo.
