Report: Jets turned down Super Bowl champion, sticking with QB Zach Wilson

Despite his struggles, the New York Jets continue to stand by Zach Wilson and refuse to add another veteran quarterback.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Carson Wentz's camp reached out to New York before he signed with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday. The Jets turned him down and reiterated their confidence in Wilson.

The Jets are 4-5, but their offense is holding them back. It ranks 30th in the NFL in points scored (16.5) and passing yards (169.5). Some of the unit's problems are related to Wilson's play. In eight games, the former first-round pick has completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 1,600 yards, five touchdowns, five interceptions, and a below-average 32.3 QBR.

New York doesn't have another viable option on its active roster. Backup QB Tim Boyle is 0-3 as a starter in four seasons, and it hasn't elevated eight-year veteran Trevor Siemian from the practice squad.

Although Wentz struggled over his last two seasons, he would give the Jets the QB depth they need. In seven seasons, the Super Bowl champion has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 151 TDs, 66 interceptions and an above-average 54.4 QBR.

However, Jets head coach Robert Saleh insists QB isn't the team's main problem.

"It's lazy just to put it all on [Wilson]," Saleh said of the offensive woes in a Tuesday news conference. "It was collective all the way across the board."

Regardless, the Jets are sticking with the 24-year-old, and he must play better. The team's playoff hopes are dwindling. The New York Times simulator notes it only has a 20 percent chance to make the postseason.
