Report: NFL wants to play regular-season games in Germany

Back in March, Sports Business Journal reported the NFL intends to have every club play no fewer than one "home" game outside of the United States at least once every eight years with the league expanding regular seasons to 17 games and, ultimately, to 18 contests.

While London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to welcome NFL teams each year moving forward barring unforeseen circumstances, such as a global health crisis, it appears the league could expand beyond the United Kingdom.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero (h/t Jeremy Bergman) reports the league will soon gauge interest from cities in Germany about hosting future regular-season games. Venues such as Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena and Borussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park are mentioned in the story.

According to NFL Network, 2.2 million people in Germany tuned in to watch at least some of the Super Bowl LV matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs. Weeks after Tampa Bay's victory, Sky Sports' Richard Graves noted the contest generated the highest U.K. Super Bowl viewing numbers in over 30 years.

Thursday's update will do little to silence the constant whispers claiming that some within the NFL want one club to host multiple annual regular-season games in Europe to set up a secondary "home base" in a city such as London or, perhaps, Munich.
