Report: NFL willing to put teams in hotels for remainder of 2020 season

Much like Major League Baseball dealt with multiple coronavirus outbreaks early in their 2020 season, the NFL now is facing a similar problem.

The Tennessee Titans have had 16 members within their organization test positive for the virus, and now the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs could experience a similar outbreak after Cam Newton and Jordan Ta'amu tested positive with their respective clubs.

The NFL now is faced with questions about how to proceed with the remainder of the season. Protocols could become more strict, but Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports that the league is willing to put teams in hotels for the remainder of the season in order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Florio adds that the only question with that idea is whether or not the NFL Players Association would agree to such a plan:

"As one source explained it to PFT, the NFLPA balked during July negotiations at a Thursday-to-Sunday team-by-team bubble. The union likely would balk at a continuous bubble for the balance of the season.

"The players may feel differently. Faced with game checks that will be lost for good if games are cancelled, staying in a hotel for the next three months seems to be an acceptable sacrifice. The NBA is doing it. The NHL has done it. If the NFL wants to have a full and complete season, the NFL needs to do it, too."

Putting all players, coaches and team personnel in hotels for the rest of the season likely will re-open the window for players to opt out of the remainder of the season.

The bubble format has worked tremendously with the NHL and NBA. However, but it'll be difficult to house entire NFL teams in hotels for the remainder of the football season. While it might seem impossible, the league needs to figure out something moving forward, or the season will be in jeopardy.
