Report: Orlando Brown turned down record-breaking offer from Chiefs
Orlando Brown will play the 2022 season under the franchise tag after he and the Kansas City Chiefs failed to reach terms on a long-term deal ahead of the July 15 deadline. It wasn't for a lack of effort from the Chiefs, though.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Brown was offered a five-year, $139 million contract that would've made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. The contract would've reportedly had a $30.25 million signing bonus, but Schefter's report didn't include the amount of guaranteed money in the offer and the tail-end of the deal may have made the total money appear deceiving.
Instead, the title of highest paid offensive lineman still belongs to Trent Williams of the San Francisco 49ers, who signed a five-year, $138 million deal in March 2021. Brown will play for $16.662 million in 2022 with the goal of signing an even bigger deal during the 2023 offseason.
Brown, 26, was a third-round pick for the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 and earned two trips to the Pro Bowl. In April 2021, he was traded along with a second-round pick to the Chiefs for a package that included first- and third-round selections. Brown earned his third career Pro Bowl nod in his first season with the Chiefs.
