Report: Patriots targeting Justin Fields, reached out to Falcons about No. 4 pick

The New England Patriots have not made a top-four pick in the draft since 1994 when they selected Willie McGinest fourth overall. That could change this week.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Patriots appear to be targeting Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and have spoken to the Atlanta Falcons about trading for the No. 4 pick.

"Word is they think highly of Ohio State's Justin Fields – highly enough that they've even spoken with the Atlanta Falcons about the fourth pick," Howe wrote.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer also reported earlier in the week that New England has had discussions with the Carolina Panthers for the eighth overall pick.

Rumors of Fields potentially sliding in the draft began after it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers, owners of the third-overall pick, have narrowed their decision to Alabama's Mac Jones and North Dakota State's Trey Lance.

According to Howe, the price for New England to move up to fourth overall could be heavy.

"It's unclear what the Patriots would have to give up for the fourth pick, but some combination of Nos. 15 and 46 and 2022 first- and second-rounders should be in play," Howe wrote.

Fields is considered the third-best quarterback in this year's draft behind Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson by many experts. He completed 70.2% of his passes for 2,100 yards, 22 touchdowns and six picks last season while leading Ohio State to the national title game and a Big Ten championship.

If the Patriots don't move up, they could land one of the second-tier quarterbacks available, such as Davis Mills, Kellen Mond or Kyle Trask.
