Report: Raiders head-coaching search is a 'two-horse race'

Although Antonio Pierce went 5-4 as Raiders interim head coach, Las Vegas owner Mark Davis still has his eye on another candidate.

"The Raiders, to me, are really in a two-horse race at this point between Antonio Pierce and Jim Harbaugh," NFL reporter Jordan Schultz said Monday on Bleacher Report's website. "There is a lot of love internally for Pierce, but Mark Davis really likes the idea of having a big-time name, a big-time hire for his prestigious franchise. Someone like Jim Harbaugh would really move the needle."

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the Raiders requested to interview Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds. Dodds and Harbaugh worked with the Raiders in 2003, which may attract the Michigan HC if he returns to the NFL.

Still, Davis should seriously consider hiring Pierce, who's left an impression on star players and earned the locker room's trust.

"I wish we had this for a full season," Pro Bowl defensive end Maxx Crosby said following Sunday's win over the Denver Broncos, per The Athletic's Tashan Reed. "We've got the right guy leading us; we've just got to keep him."

Under Pierce, the Raiders defense made huge strides. Las Vegas (8-9) finished ninth in the league in points (19.5) and 12th in passing yards (212.4) allowed.

On the offensive side of the ball, there is room for improvement. Las Vegas was 23rd in the league in points scored (19.5), and rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell posted a below-average 40.2 QBR in 11 games. He did improve over his last four games, though, throwing eight TDs and no interceptions.

If Harbaugh stays at Michigan or takes another head-coaching job, promoting Pierce is the right choice. The team's progressing, and he can accomplish more if it tweaks its roster this offseason.
