Report: Saints re-sign WR Tre'Quan Smith to two-year deal

It appears wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith won't be heading to the Atlanta Falcons this spring.

ESPN's Mike Triplett reports that the New Orleans Saints are re-signing the 2018 third-round draft pick on a two-year deal. Triplett adds the contract is worth $6 million, includes $3 million in guarantees, and has up to $4.5 million in incentives and escalators.

The 26-year-old, who has only played for the Saints during his pro career, was allowed to hit free agency when the new NFL year started. He reportedly visited the Falcons after they lost Russell Gage, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he was recruited by none other than seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady. Smith appeared in 11 games last season and recorded 32 receptions for 377 yards and three touchdowns, but Triplett notes the Saints value his contributions as a blocker and also as a potential home-run hitter in the passing attack.

As things currently stand, the Saints are on track to have Jameis Winston back atop their depth chart at the quarterback position after they struck out in their pursuit of star signal-caller Deshaun Watson. Triplett also reports New Orleans "will likely still try to add at least one more standout pass-catcher to their mix" either through free agency, a trade or next month's draft.
