The San Francisco 49ers provided an update on the status of star running back Christian McCaffrey following a shoulder injury he suffered late in the NFC Championship Game. McCaffrey took himself out of the game late in the fourth quarter.

Christian McCaffrey has had a big postseason

Any sentence with McCaffrey and injury is a scary read for 49ers fans. McCaffrey is a finalist for the NFL MVP award for his play during the regular season, as he finished with 1,459 yards rushing and 14 rushing touchdowns.

McCaffrey is arguably the main reason the 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl. He added 90 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the 49ers’ comeback win over the Detroit Lions. McCaffrey added 42 receiving yards in the NFC Championship Game. McCaffrey scored two touchdowns in the Divisional Round win over the Green Bay Packers.

According to Niners Nation, McCaffrey said his shoulder felt “fine” after the game. However, he said a doctor would have to check out his shoulder injury.

The San Francisco 49ers provide an update

Per Charean Williams with NBC Sports, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t list McCaffrey on the injury report for his Monday presser with reporters:

49ers running back Christian McCaffrey exited Sunday’s game early, playing 60 of 66 offensive snaps. Coach Kyle Shanahan did not mention McCaffrey’s name on an updated injury report during his Monday conference call with beat reporters.

It appears there are no concerns with McCaffrey’s right shoulder.

The 49ers need McCaffrey in the Super Bowl

The 49ers will be fortunate to have McCaffrey back for the Super Bowl. The 49ers will need to lean on the rushing attack against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs’ run defense has been their soft spot this year.
