Report: Steelers' staffing decisions on hold amid Mike Tomlin personal matter

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't decided on potential changes on their coaching staff. Per The Athletic's Mark Kaboly that's because head coach Mike Tomlin is dealing with an undisclosed personal matter instead of making final decisions on assistants.

So any word of the fate of embattled offensive coordinator Matt Canada remains on hold.

The only news that has come out regarding Steelers assistants is regarding linebackers coach Brian Flores, who reportedly is a candidate for the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator job and a potential candidate for the Arizona Cardinals head-coaching job.

Canada, though, is under the most scrutiny.

The Steelers' offense finished the 2022 season ranked 26th in points and 23rd in yards gained. It was the second year in a row under Canada that the offense ranked lower than 20th in total offense.

Canada's offensive philosophy, which focuses on motion, jet sweeps and short passes, and his play-calling became the focus of the ire of fans and media. Canada's resume, which features mostly college experience, is target of criticism, too.

In 2022, the Steelers were undermanned on offense, which has few playmakers. Pittsburgh broke in rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett behind one of the league's worst offensive lines. The team stressed to Pickett limiting turnovers, and he did a good job after some initial issues.

The offense improved in the second half of the season as Pickett got more reps and the offensive line gained experience playing together. But the unit is nowhere near championship caliber.

Whether the slight improvement is enough to save Canada's job remains to be seen.

The longer the team goes without announcing a decision on his future, though, the more likely it seems that he could be back for a third year.
