An update Wednesday evening on the New York Giants’ plans for the NFL Scouting Combine doesn’t look promising for starting quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones signed a four-year extension last March, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be the Giants franchise guy.

Daniel Jones’ job is under threat

Per Ed Valentine with the Big Blue Review, Giants general manager Joe Schoen said on Tuesday he believed Jones was capable of being the Giants long-term starter. However, The Giants’ position at sixth overall in April’s draft has forced Schoen to reevaluate the quarterback spot:

“Where we are at six, we’re gonna look at everything, we’re gonna look at everything, we’re gonna look at all positions,” Schoen said. “And again, you hope you’re not up there again. You don’t wanna be picking in the top 10 or the top, but it’s a good draft. It’s a solid draft across the board and we’re going to have an opportunity to get a player, good player and we’re going to evaluate all the positions and take the best player we can.”

Schoen said that Jones “understands that we’re going to need to add a quarterback.”

Schoen seems pretty eager to evaluate one of the top prospects in this year’s draft.

The New York Giants are looking at elite QBs in the draft

Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Giants met with Jayden Daniels. The Giants are on Rapoport’s list of quarterback-needy teams for the draft, as they were grouped with the “essentially” same teams Drake Maye is meeting with from Daniels’ list.

Jones’ time as the starter could be over soon

The Giants made sure to extend Jones to a quarterback-friendly contract last March. There was always a chance the team would cut ties with Jones if he didn’t keep pace with the level of play he achieved during the 2022 season.

The Giants appear pretty desperate to find Jones’ successor in this year’s draft, or the team wouldn’t be using their visits on the top quarterbacks in the draft. There are plenty of other quarterbacks who could be had later.
