The Washington Commanders released a starter

The Washington Commanders came into the offseason knowing they needed to move some money around. The team is trying to keep key pieces of the defense for 2023. They also need to add some weapons for new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The team released a starter on its defense to save cap space.

According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Commanders are cutting defensive back, Bobby McCain. The team will add nearly $4.42 million in cap space with McCain off the books.

McCain started in 16 games for the Commanders both in 2021 and 2022. He had 76 total tackles and a forced fumble during the 2022 season. McCain earned a 61.4 overall grade by Pro Football Focus for his play last season.

The team needed to make some moves to help ease their cap situation. The Commanders have a little more than $8 million in cap space for 2023, according to Over The Cap. The Commanders need more money to retain players like defensive lineman Daron Payne, who is expected to receive the franchise tag this offseason.
