Reporter explains why deal between Raiders, Kliff Kingsbury fizzled

More details about the Kliff Kingsbury situation have emerged, explaining why he spurned the Las Vegas Raiders and became the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator instead.

Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer reported both parties couldn't agree on the length of his contract. The Raiders didn't want to give the former Arizona Cardinals and Texas Tech HC a third year on his deal; as a result, it fell through.

Typically, NFL teams offer coordinators a three-year deal. However, Las Vegas is paying out contracts for ex-HCs Josh McDaniels, Jon Gruden and other front-office members who were also fired. Breer suggested the franchise was "a little leery" about giving an assistant a deal that could increase its debts.

Las Vegas is expected to hire former Chicago Bears OC Luke Getsy. This past season, the Bears ranked 19th in points scored (21.2) and 21st in yards (323.2). Clearly, Kingsbury was the better candidate. When he was with Arizona from 2019-22, the Cardinals finished top 10 in the league in yards and top 15 in points scored twice.

Regardless, the Raiders must move on and focus on finding a franchise QB to reignite an offense that was 23rd in the league in passing yards (198.8). Rookie Aidan O'Connell replaced Jimmy Garoppolo, who Las Vegas benched after six games. He failed to make a strong impression in 11 games, posting a below-average 40.6 QBR.

The Raiders have the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, within range to take a QB. They could sign a free agent, though, such as Baker Mayfield. OTC estimates Las Vegas has $36.04M in cap space, which should be enough to sign a dependable veteran.

Solidifying the most important position will help Getsy succeed in Las Vegas.
