Reporter signals Jerry Jones might keep Mike McCarthy, but that would be a mistake

If Dallas owner Jerry Jones isn't willing to take a risk, the Cowboys aren't going to end their 28-year Super Bowl drought anytime soon.

Jon Machota of The Athletic shared  that "no one should be surprised" if the Cowboys stick with head coach Mike McCarthy despite a horrible 48-32 home loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. He added firing McCarthy would result in a staff shakeup, which could be too risky for the franchise.

However, the organization not making a change after a playoff disaster would be a mistake. One reason Dallas is 5-13 in the postseason since its last Super Bowl victory is an inability to find an elite HC who can push it over the hump.

McCarthy certainly falls under this category. He's continually faltered in the playoffs since he won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers. The 60-year-old never hoisted another Lombardi trophy in 13 seasons with Green Bay, and he only has one playoff win in four seasons with the Cowboys.

If the Cowboys didn't have the talent to win a championship, that would give McCarthy an excuse, but they clearly do. Dallas has won 12 or more games for three straight seasons. This season, nine Cowboys landed on the All-Pro team.

The Cowboys can find an upgrade if they move on from McCarthy. Top HC candidates, such as Bill Belichick —a six-time Super Bowl champion — are available. Even though Jones and Belichick are strong-willed, ESPN's Adam Schefter said the pairing could "definitely work" Monday on "The Pat McAfee Show."

Jones should seriously consider moving on from McCarthy and hiring Belichick. It might be the move the team needs to finally capture a title before its championship window closes.
