Authorities took former NFL and Notre Dame safety Sergio Brown into a custody, almost a month after his mother was found dead near her home near Chicago.

According to CNN, Brown had been in Mexico. The country deported him back to the United States, Tuesday. U.S. officials then took him into custody near San Diego. CNN said the San Diego police now are arranging a transfer for Sergio Brown back to Chicago. People and TMZ reported that Brown is being charged with first-degree murder.

Police found the body of Myrtle Brown on Sept. 16. The body was behind her home in Maywood, a Chicago suburb, and near a creek. Worried relatives had called the police to check on Myrtle Brown, saying they couldn’t find her or Sergio. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office ruled her death a homicide. The report said she suffered  “multiple injuries due to assault.”

Within days, relatives, posting on social media, asked for the public’s help in locating Sergio Brown.

“My brother Sergio is still missing,” Nick Brown wrote on Instagram. “If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”

In social media videos, Sergio Brown said he believed his mother was on vacation and cops had kidnapped him

Then a video began circulating of Sergo Brown, who apparently was in Mexico City. In the Instagram video, Brown spoke to his followers. He told them:

“Fake news…Fake news…Fake news. It has to be the FBI that came into my house on Bob Marley’s death day with the 511 haze and gas unwarranted. They kidnapped me twice from home – the Maywood Police Department. It had to be the FBI or the Maywood police. I thought my [expletive] momma was on vacation.”

The video, which has been deleted, tagged ESPN.

CNN reported that Mexican law enforcement have monitored Sergio Brown since Sept. 19 and were awaiting an arrest warrant from the United States before picking him up. CNN also reported that as of Wednesday morning, Brown was in custody in San Diego on a felony fugitive arrest warrant.

Brown played for Notre Dame from 2006-09. He started with the Fighting Irish as a junior and senior. He went undrafted in 2010, but signed with the Patriots. His NFL career lasted from 2010-2016 and he also played for Colts, Jaguars, Falcons and Bills.
