Reports update if Giants may trade up to draft quarterback

There's yet another sign that fans hoping the New York Giants will trade up from the sixth pick of the 2024 NFL Draft to selection No. 3 or No. 4 with a quarterback in mind will be disappointed. 

"A high-ranking official with the team told me their draft plans are unlikely to include a first-round passer," Matt Miller of ESPN said about the Giants for a piece published Thursday. 

Miller shared this information after Giants beat reporter Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported on Wednesday night that "it is doubtful the Giants will trade up" from No. 6. 

Miller added that the Giants could attempt to move up in the second round from pick No. 47 to as high as No. 33 to grab either Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix of the Oregon Ducks. Some believe both of those signal-callers could become first-round selections on the night of April 25. 

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter is also among those who think the Giants could take a quarterback in either the second or third round of the draft if they are unable/unwilling to trade back into the first for either Penix or Nix. 

Giants general manager Joe Schoen reportedly has at least some interest in moving on from 2023 Week 1 starting quarterback Daniel Jones as soon as next offseason after Jones suffered two neck injuries and a torn ACL from the fall of 2021 through November 2023. 

However, Schoen recently hinted he will happily grab "the second-best position player" available at No. 6 if quarterbacks Caleb Williams (USC), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Drake Maye (North Carolina) and J.J. McCarthy (Michigan) are the draft's first four choices as many expect. 

"If the right quarterback is there, the Giants wouldn't hesitate to make the move," team reporter Jordan Raanan added about the club's plans for the sixth pick. 

Raanan also mentioned that the Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos are "lurking for a quarterback" and may leapfrog New York in the draft order. 

Assuming Williams goes to the Chicago Bears first overall, the Washington Commanders could take Daniels at No. 2. The New England Patriots hold the third pick and are repeatedly linked in stories with both Maye and McCarthy. 

As of late Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers as the betting favorite at +145 odds to be the sixth pick of the draft. It's looking more and more like the Giants will be the club spending that asset on the final Thursday of April.
