Rob Gronkowski staying in shape, undecided about playing in 2022

As of the start of the second night of the 2022 NFL Draft, future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski remained a free agent who hadn't yet committed to returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for one more season or to playing another competitive down in the league.

While quarterback and "best friend" Tom Brady announced his unretirement back on March 13, Gronkowski raised eyes when he admitted earlier this month he was "not ready to commit to the game of football" at that time. The situation hasn't changed with May 1 quickly approaching.

"We'll see," Gronkowski told TMZ Sports about his future. "I'm staying in shape a little bit. So, we'll see if I don't get too out of shape either. That won't be good for me."

The 32-year-old joked that his "Gronk Beach" event in Las Vegas could ultimately provide him with some clarity on what he wants to do later this year.

"'Gronk Beach' may be the party that gets me back to football," he added during his comments. "Someone's going to throw me a pass on stage, I'll probably catch it, and be like, 'Man, I miss football.'"

Gronkowski is obviously familiar with the Tampa Bay offense and has built up excellent chemistry with Brady, so the four-time Super Bowl champion can continue to enjoy somewhat of a vacation away from the sport as long as the Buccaneers keep the door open for his eventual return. It's believed the Bucs would welcome him back with open arms even as late as the beginning of training camp.
