Robert Griffin III thinks he could help the Jets in wake of Aaron Rodgers injury

Robert Griffin III has carved a really nice niche for himself as a football broadcaster and analyst, but one gets the sense that he smelled a bit of opportunity in the air when it was confirmed that New York Jets starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss the entire season with a torn Achilles.

The job will now be placed on the shoulders of Zach Wilson, who was meant to learn under Rodgers this season and soak up his knowledge and experience, but RG3 seems to think that several quarterbacks could come in and help an already talent-filled New York roster win some games — even as a backup to Wilsons.

The problem? He believes some of the potential players that have been brought up, such as Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick or even himself, would be a distraction to Wilson.

"When you talk about free agent quarterbacks there's a reason that certain guys aren't in the league and that's because they're uninspired. Some of these guys like Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick, myself, it’s not that we can’t play the game anymore,” Griffin explained on ESPN. “It’s that we’re a big distraction if you bring us in.”

Griffin went on to say that he heard from an NFL general manager as recently as this last offseason.

"I had a GM tell me this offseason, 'Hey man, I know you can still play. You look like you can still play, but if we bring you in it's going to be a distraction for our starting quarterback,'" Griffin relayed.

While it would make sense for the Jets to go out and find a veteran who could come in and not be frazzled if his number got called in relief of the 24-year-old Wilson, RG3 did admit a harsh truth Jets fans will have to quickly get used to in 2023.

They expected Rodgers would be the player to open up their Super Bowl window, but truthfully, the Jets' best chance would be sticking with Wilson and hoping that some of the magic from the four-time MVP rubbed off on him this preseason.

"I will tell you right there now there's not a guy on the street or in any booth anywhere, including myself that's going to give the Jets a better chance to win than Zach Wilson,' RG3 said. "None of us know the offense. None of us have relationships in the locker room. It's going to be Zach Wilson or nobody."
