Robert Kraft reportedly wanted Patriots to start Bailey Zappe vs. Packers over Brian Hoyer

With starting quarterback Mac Jones sidelined for at least this past Sunday's game at the Green Bay Packers due to the reported high-ankle sprain he suffered in the Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the New England Patriots turned to backup Brian Hoyer to enter the lineup at Lambeau Field for what ultimately became a 27-24 overtime defeat for the Patriots.

It appears one noteworthy individual didn't agree with the decision made by New England head coach Bill Belichick last week.

According to Scott McLaughlin of Audacy, The Ringer's Bill Simmons reported on the latest edition of his podcast that Patriots owner Robert Kraft wanted rookie and fourth-round draft pick Bailey Zappe to get the nod over Hoyer for the Week 4 matchup in Green Bay.

"One thing I heard -- as you know, I have some Pats birdies -- Kraft loves Zappe," Simmons explained during a portion of the podcast episode. "And Kraft thought he should’ve started this week over Hoyer. He’s like all-in on Zappe."

Kraft somewhat got his wish when Hoyer suffered a head injury in the first quarter of Sunday's contest, as Zappe filled in for the journeyman and ultimately completed 10-of-15 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown in his unplanned NFL regular-season debut.

The 23-year-old is currently atop the depth chart as the 1-3 Patriots prepare to host the 1-3 Detroit Lions this coming Sunday. With Jones' status unknown, Zappe could be named the club's new temporary starter even if Hoyer is cleared to resume football activities before the weekend.
