Roger Goodell spoke with D.C. mayor about new stadium for Commanders

In a wide-ranging press conference at the NFL's spring meeting on Tuesday, commissioner Roger Goodell said he's spoken with Washington, D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser and other officials in the DMV (D.C., Maryland and Virginia) area about a potential new stadium for the Washington Commanders.

There has been renewed interest in a new stadium - in particular one in D.C. proper - because of the pending change in ownership after Daniel Snyder agreed to sell the franchise to Josh Harris for over $6 billion. It appeared that last summer Snyder would have made an agreement for new digs in Virginia until its state assembly ditched those plans due to the flurry of investigations into the team's culture and operations.

Goodell's comment seems to align with what Bowser's team had told the Associated Press earlier this month:

“We have a unique opportunity to transform unused federal land at the RFK campus into a mixed-use destination that could also bring the beloved Washington Commanders back home,” a spokesperson for the mayor’s office said in an email reply to The AP. “We look forward to continued conversations with the team and our federal and local partners to get this win for Washington.”

Snyder had been pressing to replace FedEx Field for years. Formerly Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, named after the previous owner, the current venue opened in 1997 but had been quickly surpassed by newer facilities around the league. In addition, FedEx Field is routinely considered the one of the worst, if not the very worst, stadiums in the NFL. For a stadium that's not yet thirty years old, it has earned that reputation for collapsing tunnels, bursting pipes, obstructed views, horrific traffic and other problems.

Goodell also said that the sale of the team is inching closer to approval by the remaining 31 franchise owners.
