Central Washington special teams coordinator and safeties coach Ronnie Scott will join the Pittsburgh Steelers this summer at training camp in Latrobe as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, the university announced.
Pittsburgh will likely have more than a few coaching fellowships this offseason, and they have done this for seasons before. Last year, they had 5 coaches join them as part of the fellowship. Each year, it aims to create coaches that could one day become head coaches or coordinators at all levels of football.
The fellowship was created in 1987, and it is used to try and help increase the diversity amongst NFL coaches at large. As of recent, many staffs have been urged to add more offensive coaches, as those tend to lead to more head coaching jobs. It is open to college, high school, former NFL players and former coaches
“I’m honored to be chosen for this internship with such a prestigious NFL organization and culture of winning,” Scott said in Central Washington’s press release. “I’m excited to soak in all the knowledge and bring as much as possible back to Central for this upcoming season!”
Scott played defensive back for Alabama State as a player, graduating from the school in 2018. In the 2017 season, he was named first-team All-SWAC. After playing, he decided to get into the coaching realm, leading him to where he is today.
He joined Central Washington’s staff in the offseason. Prior to that, he coached defensive backs at Highland Community College and worked with special teams as well. The Steelers often let the coaches roam around to find their expertise and specialty at certain spots. It is likely that Scott will get experience not just at safety and special teams, but at other spots as well to make for a well-rounded background.
