Russell Wilson out at least a month with ruptured finger tendon?

Even before it was learned that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson had flown to Los Angeles to see a specialist about the injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand that he suffered in Thursday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams, it was presumed the one-time Super Bowl champion would miss at least some time due to the setback.

The situation may, however, be worse than some feared.

Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Wilson has a ruptured middle-finger tendon, will likely require surgery and will be sidelined for a minimum of one month:

Journeyman backup Geno Smith immediately climbs to the top of the Seattle depth chart at the position and is on track to make his first start since 2017 when he was with the New York Giants. Smith replaced Wilson on Thursday evening and completed 10-of-17 passes for 131 yards with a touchdown and a late-game interception that occurred after wide receiver Tyler Lockett seemingly tripped himself while running his route.

The Seahawks (2-3) next face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 17 ahead of games against the New Orleans Saints (Oct. 25) and Jacksonville Jaguars (Oct. 31) before their bye. Assuming Seattle doesn't go shopping for a proven commodity via a trade or free agency, Smith should get the nod for each of those matchups as Seattle continues to evaluate Wilson's recovery.
