Ryan Succop wins Buccaneers job, Matt Gay waived

ESPN's Jenna Laine reported Friday morning that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named 33-year-old Ryan Succop the club's starting placekicker and waived 2019 fifth-round draft pick Matt Gay.

Last weekend, Scott Smith of the team's official website wrote how Gay altered his kicking technique to gain accuracy on shorter field goal attempts. On Sept. 1, though, the Bucs announced the club had signed Succop, a veteran who first entered the league in 2009.

It appears Succop, who has converted 82.2% of his field goals during his career, needed only a few days to win head coach Bruce Arians over.

Succop dealt with injury setbacks throughout the 2019 campaign and converted only one of six field-goal tries. Gay, meanwhile, connected on five of eight attempts from 50+ yards, but, as Laine noted, he struggled with kicks in the open south end zone of Raymond James Stadium due to windy conditions. He ended the season having converted 27 of 35 field goals.
