New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton pulled off quite the ruse in order to propose to girlfriend Skylene Montgomery on Friday.

According to Nell Nolan of NOLA.com, Payton proposed with the aid of Saints owner Gayle Benson. The coach invited Montgomery to what was billed as an anniversary toast for Benson and her late husband Tom, complete with a fake invitation on Benson’s part.

Friends and family were invited believing it was an early birthday party for Montgomery.

The surprise engagement party even featured a custom cake for the couple.

Montgomery is a former Miss West Virginia. She and Payton will be sticking around New Orleans for a while after Payton signed a five-year contract extension with the Saints in September.
