San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Bosa and the San Francisco 49ers are set to host the Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon with a trip to the NFC Championship Game on the line.

Bosa is coming off a dominant regular season in which the edge rusher will likely win NFL Defensive Player of the Year. While the Ohio State product’s focus is on this game, he has to be looking forward to the offseason.

There’s a good chance that Bosa will sign a record-breaking contract extension with San Francisco at some point ahead of the 2023 season. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport added another layer to this with his report on Sunday.

“Another player set to make a lot of money, I mean a lot of money, is Nick Bosa. My understanding is this offseason is the time when the 49ers would like to do a deal. Of course, his target is going to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.”

Report on Nick Bosa’s contract situation

Right now, the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL on a per-year basis is Los Angeles Rams future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald. He’s earning $31.67 million annually on his current three-year deal. It stands to reason that Bosa will surpass that figure.

As you can see, Bosa has been a dominant figure for San Francisco since the team made him the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. At just 25 years old, he’s also now hitting his prime.

We’ve seen the NFL market play out on a near never-ending loop in each of the past several offseasons. In addition to Donald’s record-breaking extension last offseason, fellow edge rushers Von Miller and T.J. Watt inked massive contract extensions recently.

At this point, it stands to reason that Nick Bosa will earn somewhere near $35 million annually once San Francisco extends him.
