On July 26th, 2022, The Seattle Seahawks lost a phenomenal running back. Chris Carson lasted five seasons and had to hang up the cleats because of a brutal neck injury he had tried rehabbing for over a year.

This is very similar to Andrew Luck who retired due to “a myriad of issues”.  Some players take a beating more than others and unfortunately can’t bounce back despite an offseason.

Carson retired before his injuries got worse. I commend Carson for calling it quits before irreversible damage took place.

Carson was a hard-nosed, punishing running back

Over a span of five seasons, Carson racked up 876 touches, 24 rushing TDs, and 7 receiving TDs. He was a solid workhorse for fantasy football because he always added yards after contact.

He was one of the more quiet leaders in the locker room, but nonetheless a big part of why the Seahawks had a fighting chance of getting to the playoffs.

What is next for the Seahawks?

Removing Carson from the RB depth chart puts Rashaad Penny at the #1 spot, with Kenneth Walker III DeeJay Dallas, and Travis Homer behind him.

I wouldn’t say all hope is lost. Penny had many glimpses of success last season and his backups are quick, fast, and shifty. It’ll be one of the faster RB squads the Seahawks have had, and I’m going to keep a close eye on the situation.

Final Thought

Mentorship is something Carson brought for a lot of the rookies, especially Penny. They were nearly best friends and it has definitely helped him mature fast in this league.

Chris Carson’s punishing running style will be greatly missed, but this is an excellent opportunity for the next wave of fresh legs to come through the reigns.
