As is the unfortunate reality of the NFL at time, the Seattle Seahawks are losing a beloved member of the organization.

DeShawn Shead, who spent five of his six seasons as an NFL player with Seattle before joining Pete Carroll's staff as a defensive assistant in 2021, is joining the Miami Dolphins in an undisclosed role. The former cornerback announced his departure on Instagram, but not without thanking the Seahawks for so many good years.

"I had an amazing journey here in Seattle!" Shead wrote. "Met my wife @mrs_jshead, had 3 amazing kids, started my NFL career, became a Super Bowl champion, made life long friends and started my coaching career! I want to thank @petecarroll, all my former teammates and players, everyone I’ve connected with in Seattle, the @12s and the whole @seahawks organization for an amazing 12yrs!

"With that being said, I’m excited and can’t wait to continue my coaching career with the Miami Dolphins next season!!"

Shead, who signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2012, was a lesser-known member of the Legion of Boom. It took him a while to break into the lineup, but started to get more playing time once Byron Maxwell left in 2015. Over his five seasons in Seattle, Shead appeared in 54 games and started 22, totaling 153 total tackles, 24 passes defended and two interceptions.

Shead spent his final NFL season with the Detroit Lions, where he also played sparingly. He also spent time with the Seahawks and the New Orleans Saints in 2019, but didn't play for either team.

The Seahawks' assistant defensive backs coach for the past three years, Shead now moves on to join head coach Mike McDaniel and new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver in Miami.
