Seahawks' Russell Wilson already had finger surgery, out roughly six weeks

The news continues to get worse for the 2-3 Seattle Seahawks as it pertains to star quarterback Russell Wilson and the injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand that sidelined him during Thursday's prime-time loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

It was learned earlier in the day that Wilson suffered a ruptured middle-finger tendon and would likely require surgery at some point. Since that time, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has reported that specialist Dr. Steven Shin already completed the procedure on the one-time Super Bowl champion.

"Wilson is expected to be out for roughly six weeks due to the complicated nature of the operation, which required screws to stabilize Wilson's finger," Rapoport added.

Assuming the timeline is accurate, Wilson will probably miss at least five games total: Matchups against the Pittsburgh Steelers (Oct. 17), New Orleans Saints (Oct. 25), Jacksonville Jaguars (Oct. 31), Green Bay Packers (Nov. 14), and Arizona Cardinals (Nov. 21). Seattle's bye is in Week 9.

Journeyman backup Geno Smith replaced Wilson on Thursday night and becomes the team's temporary QB1 barring a trade or free-agency acquisition. Smith completed 10-of-17 passes for 131 yards with a touchdown and a game-sealing fourth-quarter interception against the Rams and is on pace to make his first start since the 2017 campaign next Sunday in Pittsburgh.
