Sean Payton hopes odd motivation tactic supercharges Broncos

Sean Payton hopes his latest motivational tactic turns the Broncos into a high-performance vehicle.

The recently hired Denver HC told NBC Sports' Peter King he's parking an old car with no side or rearview mirrors at the Broncos facility.

"As he said at the Combine, he wants his players and his new organization to look ahead, and not behind, at the nightmare that was the 2022 Broncos season," King wrote of the car.

Last season, Denver went 5-12 and appeared to make one of the worst trades in recent memory, dealing two first-rounders (and more) to Seattle for QB Russell Wilson, who posted career lows in passing TDs (16) and passer rating (84.4).

The Broncos are stuck with Wilson because they signed him to a five-year contract extension with $165M guaranteed. They can't release him because the deal has no cap savings until 2025, per OverTheCap.

If that wasn't enough, Payton faces the challenge of trying to supply the roster with fresh talent without picks until the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Payton is a miracle worker who led the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV victory. Before New Orleans hired him in 2006, the Saints made five playoff appearances in 49 seasons.

Yet, it was a better situation than Denver since the Saints signed a franchise QB (Drew Brees) and had the No. 2 pick in the 2006 draft.

After seven consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, the Broncos need more than quirky motivational tactics to transform into a high-end ride.
