There were rumblings that the Seattle Seahawks could potentially cut quarterback Geno Smith after this past season, but the veteran remains on the roster heading into 2024.

Now, he is preparing to play for a new head coach.

The Seahawks parted ways with Pete Carroll after the 2023 campaign and hired Mike Macdonald, and Smith recently spoke about the expectations from Macdonald.

“He is hard hitting,” Smith said, via Hawk Mania. “He wants us to come out there, be confident and dominate. Know our assignments. Go out there and play like there is 13 players on the field. He wants us to know He wants us to get the crowd involved, the fans involved and the community involved. Allow this team to grow and take shape as the season comes along.”

The funny thing is, Macdonald did not seem entirely committed to Smith as the starter when he was asked about it earlier this offseason, but as of right now, it seems that Smith will be the guy for Seattle in Week 1.

Of course, the Seahawks did swing a trade with the Washington Commanders to acquire Sam Howell last month, and there are rumors that Seattle could potentially take a quarterback in the NFL Draft.

We’ll have to see what transpires over the next several months, but Smith certainly appears to have the inside track to the starting job in 2024.

Smith is coming off of back-to-back Pro Bowl campaigns, most recently throwing for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 92.1 in 15 starts this past year.

The 33-year-old was far more effective in 2022, when he totaled 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 picks while leading the NFL in completion percentage (69.8 percent). He also registered a 100.9 passer rating.

Geno Smith signed a three-year extension with the Seahawks last offseason.
