The NFL season is less than two weeks away and teams have started the process of trimming their rosters down to 53. Every year, the cut deadline sees some unexpected cuts and this year is no different.

The Bills have released veteran tight end O.J. Howard after he signed a one-year deal with Buffalo in free agency. Howard has had some success in the NFL and is a great athlete. Should the Packers make an attempt to sign the former Buccaneer and Bill?

Why Would Green Bay Even Consider?

Simply put, the Packers’ tight end room has been a question mark all offseason. Robert Tonyan is coming off an ACL injury, and although he is practicing, it is unclear whether or not he will be 100 percent come Week 1. Marcedes Lewis is a great blocker and has been a reliable option for Rodgers, but the 38-year-old is not an explosive weapon like he once was. Tyler Davis has earned plenty of praise from Packers’ coaches but has had a shaky preseason.

Should the Packers Sign Howard?

The only thing Howard could bring to the Packers would be an athletic tight end that could fill a need until Tonyan is back to 100 percent. Howard would be a cheap addition, but his career production may not justify signing him.

Howard has only played a full season once in his career and it was last year. He started nine games and only had 14 catches for 135 yards. If the Packers truly trust Davis and keep him on the roster, there is no reason the team would sign Howard.
