Some NFL teams might not have new alternate helmets until 2023?

NFL fans rejoiced via Twitter upon learning on Thursday that teams will be permitted to have alternate helmets starting with the 2022 season.

To steal from ESPN icon Lee Corso: Not so fast, my friend.

Teams have until July 31 of this year to inform the league of plans to use secondary helmets for 2022, but Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported: "The notice date for 2022 uniform changes has passed, and no new uniforms can be developed for the 2022 season, other than those previously approved by the League Office for the 2022 season."

As Florio notes, this will likely prevent some clubs from using helmets that include throwback logos, which would clash with approved uniforms for the 2022 campaign. Such franchises could still make modifications to current helmets for next year or simply wait one more season before going all-in on the concept.

In the end, the updated policy is a plus for the league and for paying customers, but fans of certain teams might have to wait just a little bit longer than first thought to see the helmets they truly want during games.
