Some NFL teams want start of season to be postponed?
Rumors continue to circulate that the NFL is potentially planning to postpone the start of the 2020 regular season to mid-October because of the coronavirus pandemic.
In April, John Ourand and Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal mentioned Thursday, Oct. 15 for a possible rescheduled opening night. Currently, the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to start defending their Super Bowl crown with a home game versus the Houston Texans on Sept. 10.
On Tuesday, however, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated's MMQB told WFAN and Radio.com personality Mike Francesa some clubs are already against starting in September as normal.
"I know for a fact that there are teams that want the season backed up now," Breer told Francesa. "They would rather the league just bite the bullet right now and say 'we're starting Oct. 1' or whatever that date is so they've got the flexibility to move the Super Bowl back in Feb. if they want."
Feb. 28 is the last Sunday of the month next year.
"I think the point of a lot of these teams," Breer explained, "is why don't we wait a month? We'll give our players time to get in shape. We'll give everybody a chance to get their house in order. We'll adjust the rules.
"And while that is going on, we'll get a chance to see the NBA start back up. We'll get a chance to see the NHL start back up. We'll get a chance to watch what happens, the fallout from European soccer leagues ... it would give (NFL teams) time to gather more information on what's working and not working in other sports."
Major League Soccer intends to resume its season via a 26-club tournament on July 8. The NHL has scheduled training camps to open on July 10. The NBA is targeting July 30 to resume its campaign.
Earlier Monday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said the Aug. 6 Hall of Fame Game between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers in Canton, Ohio likely won't include a large crowd even though the Muirfield Village Golf Club is scheduled to welcome around 8,000 fans in July for Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament.
