While the Buffalo Bills have their starting Quarterback set for the next decade, they still need a QB2. The Bills seem to change backup QBs every year or two. They have had Matt Barkley, Case Keenum, Mitch Trubisky, and Kyle Allen back up Josh Allen the last few years. Unfortunately for the Bills, they probably don’t have enough cap space to be able to get a good backup to Josh Allen, which is why they’ve had Kyle Allen and Matt Barkley in the QB room recently.

Having a QB2 to Josh Allen consistently for longer than one year will be a good thing for him to keep progressing year after year. While he’s a superstar and a top QB in this league, having a good experienced vet behind him will help him continue to progress and he’ll continue to grow. So let’s dive into the QB room this time.

Josh Allen

Josh is coming off of his best rushing season yet, rushing for 524 yards and 15 TDs, which was tied with Jalen Hurts for 2nd in the NFL. To go along with that, he had 4,300 passing yards and 29 TDs. All around, Allen had one of his best seasons to date. Joe Brady helped keep him multi-dimensional for the second half of the season. Allen is going into his second year of his six-year/$258M extension.

Kyle Allen

Kyle Allen, who trains a lot with Josh Allen, signed a one-year deal with Buffalo and competed with Matt Barkley during the summer for the QB2 job up until Barkley was placed on IR. Allen is going into March as an unrestricted free agent.

Shane Buechele

After final cut-downs, Buffalo signed former Chiefs QB Shane Buechele to their practice squad. Buechele stayed there and never saw the active roster throughout the season. Buffalo signed him to a reserve/futures contract after the season.

State Of The Bills Roster: Quarterback

The Buffalo Bills are going into this off-season with a glaring need at QB2 yet again. Historically, Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane don’t like to spend too much money on the backup QB position, and this year likely will be no different. With needs on both sides of the ball, Buffalo likely brings back Kyle Allen and goes to the draft to find Josh’s backup. If that’s the case and they do go to the draft, they likely don’t take one until Round 5 at the earliest. This could be another year where the Bills look at preseason roster cuts to fill out their QB room.
