Stats show Buccaneers' Tom Brady doesn't draw high number of roughing the passer calls

An opinion shared by some after Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Grady Jarrett found himself on the wrong end of a controversial roughing the passer penalty this past Sunday is that Tampa Bay Buccaneers star quarterback Tom Brady routinely gets such "calls in his favor."

Numbers shared by legendary broadcaster Jim Gray say otherwise.

According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, Gray noted during Monday's edition of the "Let's Go!" SiriusXM show and podcast that Brady drew just one roughing penalty last season and none in 2019 while with the New England Patriots. The seven-time Super Bowl champion is currently 16th in the NFL as it pertains to receiving roughing calls since 2020.

Additionally, the Joe Bucs Fan website pointed out that Brady has drawn roughing flags 2.1% of the time he's been sacked since 2010, good for 61st out of 91 eligible signal-callers sacked at least 100 times.

"Because I’m a pocket passer, a lot of those roughing the passers come with guys extending plays, which I don’t really do," Brady attempted to explain during that portion of Monday's show. "So that doesn’t surprise me I’m down on the list. I’d love to be up there a little bit higher and get some 15-yard penalties for my team, but it’s not always the case, unfortunately."

Jarrett was flagged late in Sunday's contest that the Bucs ultimately won 21-15 because referee Jerome Boger determined the pass-rusher "unnecessarily" threw Brady to the ground during a sack. Meanwhile, Brady has been accused of kicking Jarrett multiple times on Sunday even though the future Hall of Famer was never flagged for such conduct.
