Steelers add another former Raven to stacked defense

The Steelers aren't done taking players from their AFC North division rival. After agreeing to terms on a three-year deal with LB Patrick Queen on Tuesday, Pittsburgh is adding another defender who began his career with the Ravens.

According to Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, the Steelers are signing safety DeShon Elliott, a sixth-round pick by Baltimore in 2018, to a two-year, $6 million contract.

Elliott has spent the past two seasons with the Dolphins (2023) and Lions (2022), posting 178 tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and 10 passes defensed.

Pittsburgh has been in the market for a safety ever since releasing Keanu Neal earlier in March after a failed physical. Elliott is now set to play alongside All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

The 26-year-old is a good run-support safety and will allow Fitzpatrick to primarily play centerfield, where he has had most of his success on defense.

Adding Elliott for a cheap price will also allow the Steelers to still make a splash play at a position of need, such as wide receiver.

Pittsburgh traded wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Panthers and must add another playmaker now. Several options, including Mike Williams, Tyler Boyd and Marquise Brown, are still available on the open market.

Elliott now joins his former teammate in Pittsburgh, where the two will face their former team at least two times a year. One of their biggest jobs will be slowing down running back "King" Derrick Henry, a two-time NFL rushing yards and touchdowns leader (2019, 2020).

However, Elliott already has experience doing just that. In 2020, Elliott took on Henry one-on-one in a Week 11 game against the Titans and brought him down.

The Steelers will need Elliott's physicality for at least the next couple of years, as the AFC North is poised to be the most difficult division in the NFL once again.
