Steelers cut veteran RB, special-teams operative Trey Edmunds

The Pittsburgh Steelers made an interesting move the day before veteran players are supposed to report for training camp, and released veteran running back and special teams operative Trey Edmunds.

As CBS Sports notes, this move on the Steelers' part breaks a pattern they have set over the last few seasons of releasing Edmunds late in training camp and then signing him to the practice squad the following day.

The 27-year-old Virginia Tech product spent one season with the New Orleans Saints before joining the Steelers in 2018, His best season for Pittsburgh was 2019, when he rushed for 92 yards on 22 carries, as well as caught six of seven targets for 48 yards.

Edmunds' release makes room on the Steelers' depth chart, although the competition will be fierce with Najee Harris being the clear No.1 running back out of the gate. Harris ended his rookie campaign with 307 carries for 1,200 yards and seven rushing touchdowns, as well as 74 receptions for 467 yards and three touchdowns in the air.

NFL teams open up training camp with a 90-man roster on Tuesday. Rosters have to be cut down to 85 players by August 16, 80 players by August 23, and 53 players by 4 p.m. on August. 30.
