Steelers honoring late QB Dwayne Haskins with No. 3 sticker on helmets

The Pittsburgh Steelers open the 2022 NFL regular season at the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday but had something else on their minds ahead of the weekend.

Per Teresa Varley of the Steelers' website, the franchise confirmed on Friday that it will honor former backup quarterback Dwayne Haskins throughout the 2022 campaign with stickers of his "3" jersey number placed on the backs of player helmets.

Haskins died on April 9 after he was struck by a dump truck on an interstate in Florida. It was discovered that he was legally drunk and had drugs in his system at the time of the incident. He was just 24 years old.

Haskins originally entered the NFL when the now-Washington Commanders made him a first-round draft pick in 2019 but was released by that organization in December 2020. He first signed with the Steelers in January 2021 and then put pen to paper on a one-year restricted free agent tender this past March. He never received an opportunity to throw a pass for the club during a regular-season game.

Pittsburgh now has free-agent signing Mitchell Trubisky serving as its QB1 ahead of rookie Kenny Pickett and career backup Mason Rudolph following the retirement of future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger.

In total, Haskins appeared in 16 NFL games with Washington and made 13 starts. He posted a 3-10-0 record and completed 267-of-444 passes (60.1%) for 2,804 yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
