The Pittsburgh Steelers will be undergoing a period of transition in 2022.
Some things remain the same like Mike Tomlin as head coach and he will try to extend his streak of not having a losing season.
But he will be seeing different people at important positions in the front office and on the field.
Even their home field will get a new name and ESPN’s Brooke Pryor took note of the changes.
Pryor tweeted that Heinz Field will now be known as Acrisure Stadium.
It will be difficult for diehard Steelers fans to accept the name change because it has been known as Heinz Field since it opened in 2001 to replace Three Rivers Stadium as the team’s home field.
Likewise, Kevin Colbert retired as Steelers General Manager after the 2022 NFL Draft, ending his 22-year career with the squad wherein he also became Director of Football Operations and Vice President.
Taking his place is Omar Khan who has been with the organization since 2001.
Khan became a Football Administration Coordinator, Director of Football Administration, and Vice President of Football and Business Administration before getting promoted as General Manager.
A New Era Ensues At Quarterback
But perhaps the biggest change that football fans will notice is that Ben Roethlisberger won’t take the field for Pittsburgh anymore.
The two-time Super Bowl champion and six-time Pro Bowler retired after last season wherein he squeezed in one final playoff appearance.
Tomlin will have to choose his successor between Mitchell Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and Mason Rudolph.
Conventional wisdom follows that Trubisky could pave the path for Pickett who they hope to be their next franchise quarterback.
However, Rudolph isn’t out of contention, especially if he will have a strong performance at training camp.
It will be the first time in a while that Tomlin will have to decide on an undisputed starter.
He may remain the team’s head coach but that’s one change he has to get right.
